Is it possible for anyone to write a program that will make all your journal entries private at once?

The faq said that the way to do this is to mark them all private one by one, which was the wrong answer.

There are programs to do this - check [livejournal.com profile] lj_clients. However, some of them are buggy and can trash entries.

Yes - I'd recommend Perl (http://www.perl.com/) and HTTP::Recorder (http://search.cpan.org/dist/HTTP-Recorder/lib/HTTP/Recorder.pm), WWW::Mechanize (http://search.cpan.org/~petdance/WWW-Mechanize-1.02/lib/WWW/Mechanize.pm) or failing that LWP libwww-perl (http://www.linpro.no/lwp/) .

Cheers dude - you actually thought I was capable of doing it myself, did you?!

I don't see any reason why you can't. You said "anyone" and not only are you a member of that set, but you're also a person with whom I've had technical conversations. (And don't even start on the "girl" thing; [livejournal.com profile] sarah_mum and Huw Chaos' missus Australian Helen are both expert database programmers, they just don't show off about it).

You could also do it with no programming, but more typing involved, by copying the HTML source off the Livejournal page that does the private-flag-changing, then pasting and saving it many times over (adding <BASE HREF="http://www.livejournal.com"> to the HEAD section), just changing the entry number in the form source each time. You can get a list of entry numbers by looking at the HTML source off your Livejournal archive calendar. You could do all of this in Notepad but it would probably be quicker to use a text editor that supports recordable macros such as Textpad (http://www.textpad.com), Emacs or Vi.

Jason made all my entries friends only at once with some program, so I'm guessing the same thing can be done if you want to make all your entries private...

Who was that mysterious stranger you were with on the weekend?

I don't know - he's some bloke with a beard who seems to have taken to living in my house. I should ask him what has happened to my fella, but I'm too scared. ;-)
