Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lazrus_armagedn with the ultimately helpful 'press F11' option, causing the menus to appear on the same level as the address bar, which is odd.

Still no idea what caused in in the first place, since going to full screen mode now does not have the same effect.

... I hadn't just tried that

Possibly a bit of script* that set a browser to full-screen at some point ... Porn-site popups are usually the worst culprits here, I've noticed ... and it's fucking annoying ... It's not like getting unrequested porn-related pop-ups in a small window isn't bad enough, but they have to go full-screen, with no menus either!

going to full screen mode now does not have the same effect.

Hmmm ... that shouldn't be ... F11 should toggle you between the two states ... The two different states should be identical each time you change to them, though

*There are certain things you can do with ASP that not many people know about ... and it's just as well, cos with some/i> of 'em I can actually read/write your hard-drive ... even make a couple of not insignificant registry changes ... and if more people knew about it, the dangers of web-browsing would be significantly higher

Full screen gives you no menus and a small row of buttons and the address bar which auto-hide. I had the normal big buttons, the address bar below and no menus.

Judging by what happened when I went to full screen mode and back, the menus were actually next to the address bar (off the screen) all along. Although since my toolbars are locked, I can't have done this by accident.

When I toggle to full-screen, I see only my standard-buttons ... although, as my default view is small-icons and selective-text-on-right, I can't say whether a change in size is normal as far as you are concerned

When I toggle back to my default view, I see ... well ... my default view - title-bar, menus, standard buttons, URL address box and status-bar at the bottom

Dunnno, if this helps ... but I am now extremely tired (up 24 hours and full of whisky) and need to go to bed ... so I suggest you play around with your default view first ( view-menu / toolbars / customise ... and then the two drop-down dialogues text options and icon options) ... and then use F11 to toggle between the two and see what the differences are

Let me know, if you have any difficulty or experience any further weirdness

I think in full screen big-to-small buttons is the norm, and I'm not really bothered about playing with it any more, tbh. It's doing what I want it to and I know what to do if I lose my menus again.

OK ... Well, glad to have been of service and that it's all sorted
